Service Overview
Polio is a highly infectious disease which mainly affects young children caused by poliovirus. It invades the nervous system, and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. The virus is transmitted by person-to-person spread mainly through the faecal-oral route or, less frequently, contaminated water or food and multiplies in the intestine.
Service Description
Vaccination is recommended for:
1. Individuals who have not been vaccinated previously, or partially vaccinated
2. Individuals staying more than 4 weeks in countries with risk of polio transmission
3. Individuals visiting countries where polio is endemic
Dosage Information:
Children: Three doses are required at months 3, 4 and 5, followed by booster doses at month 18 and oral booster at age 10-11, the vaccine can be given from 6 weeks of age. Adult: Three doses are required (0,1, 6 months).
When to be vaccinated:
4 weeks to 12 months before departure for adult travellers who have previously received three or more doses of Polio vaccine should also be given another one-time booster dose of polio vaccine.
Travellers who have not received any polio vaccine previously should complete the 3 doses of polio vaccination before departure.
